Resources for English tutorials
This term we will be improving our reading and writing skills. We will study the book 'Pax' written by Sara Pennypacker and look at the themes, plot, authors intent and the correct way to embed quotes into our writing. We will then be watching a film, and learning how to compare and contrast the two texts.
Below you will find the tutorials for this unit. You may want to use these resources to help with your CATs and to revise before your post assessment at the end of the unit.
Tutorial 1: Introduction
This tutorials is an introduction to term 2 English. We will be looking at the novel 'Pax'.
Reading "Pax"
Over the next few lessons we will be reading the novel 'Pax' as a class. You will be required to write a chapter summary for each chapter, and provide a relevant quote.
Tutorial 2: The CAT
In this tutorial you will be introduced to the second English CAT.
TUTORIAL 3: Reading and Viewing/The CAt
In this tutorial we will be looking at the English CAT and how it links to reading and viewing.
TUTORIAL 4: READING AND VIEWING/THE CAT
In this tutorial we will be learning about reading strategies and the characters in Pax.
TUTORIAL 5: READING AND VIEWING/BOOST
In this tutorial you will complete a practice CAT. This will help you get some feedback before your CAT on Monday.
TUTORIAL 6: THE ENGLISH CAT
You will be completing the second CAT for English during this session in test conditions.
Tutorial 7: The Plot
In this tutorial you will learn what a plot is in relation to the story 'Pax'.
Tutorial 8: Themes
In this tutorial you will learn what a theme is.
Tutorial 9: The Author's Purpose
In this tutorial you will learn the importance of knowing the author’s purpose and identify the messages and ideas Sara Pennypacker wanted to portray through her story. You will demonstrate this in a TEEL paragraph.
Tutorial 10: The Characters
In this tutorial you will learn about the characters and protagonist in the novel 'Pax'.

Tutorial 11, 12: Watching a Film
Now that we have studied the novel 'Pax', we are going to watch the film 'Red Dog True Blue'. We will be using these two texts to compare and contrast the similarities and differences between the two.
Tutorial 13: Analysing a film
In this tutorial we will begin analysing the film 'Red Dog True Blue' while developing an understanding of what a synopsis is and how to write one.
Tutorial 14: Themes
To identify a range of themes found in the film ‘Red Dog True Blue’.
Tutorial 15: Comparing and Contrasting
In this tutorial we will begin comparing and contrasting the characters and more in relation to the novel 'Pax' and the film 'Red Dog True Blue'.
Tutorial 16: Super TEEL
In this presentation we will learn how to write an extended SUPER TEEL paragraph! This will allow you to compare and contrast things in one paragraph.
Tutorial 17: The CAT
In this tutorial we will look at what the CAT will look like.
Tutorial 18: Proofreading and Editing
After the CAT, it's important to proofread and edit your work. This lesson will be around understanding what proofreading it and effectively editing your work for improvement. You will also have a look at the rubric and self assess.
Tutorial 19: Grammatical Person
In this tutorial we will learn how to use the correct grammatical person when writing.
